EO-Jev

EO-Jev: MBZUAI ORYX LoRA on d3-flash for satellite imagery choice questions, author-reported EO benchmark gains, MIT repo and Hugging Face weights.

Overview

EO-Jev (github.com/mbzuai-oryx/EO-Jev, MIT code) from MBZUAI ORYX adapts the d3-flash decision model (8.4B parameters; Qwen3.5-9B backbone with a 255-code linear readout on the last prompt token, vLLM Semantic Router) to Earth observation with LoRA on public training splits. Authors Mohamed Atef Abouelhadid, Diaa Addeen Abuhani (equal contribution), Muhammad Akhtar Munir, Fahad Shahbaz Khan, and Salman Khan (corresponding) report results on 30 settings from 23 public EO benchmarks. The GitHub repository was created November 2, 2026; Hugging Face weights mx297/EO-Jev appeared November 3, 2026. This is a fresh research release with a small GitHub star count as of early November 2026.

Problem: Earth observation workflows need fast, thresholdable answers on satellite and aerial imagery without open-ended captioning for every analyst gate.

Built for: Remote sensing and geospatial teams who want open weights that answer typed multiple-choice questions on EO imagery in one forward pass, with defer-to-analyst thresholds.

How Jev is used

Role in the product flow
Per-question EO analyst gate: one forward pass returns a probability for every choice option; a per-question threshold accepts the answer or defers to a human analyst
Primitives
Choice
State in
EO images (including multi-image change pairs where the benchmark requires them) plus a text state string and typed choice questions in six families: scene and land use, VQA, counting, multi-temporal change, building damage and disaster type, and geo-localisation. About 20% general decision data is replayed during training per the README.
Decision out
Option probabilities from the frozen linear readout without text generation. Inference uses merged LoRA weights so EO-Jev matches d3-flash architecture and inference cost after adapter merge.
  1. Load mx297/EO-Jev from Hugging Face with trust_remote_code (Transformers AutoModel pattern in the model card)
  2. Call system_one with state, images, and choice questions keyed by your workflow ids
  3. Read probabilities per option from the returned answers map
  4. Compare each question's top probability to its calibrated threshold to auto-accept or route to analyst review
  5. Optional: reproduce paper benchmarks via bench runners, converters, and slurm scripts in the repository

EO-Jev is an open research adaptation of d3-flash, not hosted api.typesafe.ai System One. It targets the same decision-model contract: typed choice questions on shared multimodal state, probabilities in one pass, and explicit defer paths when confidence is below a per-question threshold. openbmb-minicpm-ocr-jev is the closest analogue in this directory (another recent open specialist head from a research group). yinsongxu-llm2jev and liqiiiii-jeva document other independent open System One style stacks; mapika-decider ships a general Qwen3.5 decision family on POST /v1/systemone. Counting, change quantification, and calibration far from training data remain hard in the README; treat author-reported benchmark tables as paper results until you rerun bench/ on your hardware. FAQ

Is EO-Jev affiliated with TypeSafe Jev?
No. EO-Jev is an independent MBZUAI ORYX research release built on the open d3-flash decision model. It uses a Jev-style typed choice interface in the Hugging Face example, but it is not the hosted TypeSafe api.typesafe.ai product.
Which tasks do the authors still call hard?
The README and paper summary highlight counting, change quantification, and calibration far from the training distribution as remaining weak spots, even after EO LoRA adaptation.
What did EO specialization cost on general decisions?
Authors report about -1.8 points on general (non-EO) decisions compared with the base d3-flash model, framed as the tradeoff for EO gains.
How should I use the benchmark numbers?
Tables in the README and on the project page are author-reported on their stated public EO benchmarks and open specialist baselines. The repository ships scripts to reproduce runs; treat production thresholds as your own calibration problem, especially near out-of-distribution geography or sensors.
How do I run inference locally?
The Hugging Face model card shows AutoModel.from_pretrained('mx297/EO-Jev', trust_remote_code=True) and model.system_one(state, images, questions) returning per-option probabilities. See the repository env.local.sh setup for full benchmark reproduction.
